Choosing the right size for your custom house portrait.

“What size do you recommend?”

This is a question I often get asked from clients who are purchasing a custom home portrait. Choosing the right size custom painting for your space can be a daunting task. You want the piece to compliment your style, fit within your space and remain within your budget, right? While I can’t tell you exactly which size is right for you, here are a few things to consider when trying to choose which size painting to purchase.

1) Consider the space where the painting will be displayed. A smaller piece looks great on a display shelf or gallery wall. While a larger piece will be more of a statement. Also consider adding a mat or double mat and determine what size frame you prefer. If this is going to be a gift, think about the person you are gifting the artwork to. Do they have large art pieces on the wall or do they prefer smaller display pieces?

2) How much detail do you want in the painting? The smallest house portrait size I offer (besides my custom ornaments) are 5x7. These are quite small and I’m not always able to add in too much detail. If you’re wanting to add in pets or house numbers on the exterior or any other special additions, I’d consider a larger size to make sure those details are noticeable.

3) How sentimental is the piece for you? A lot of my smaller portraits are given as housewarming or realtor gifts. These are great for this type of gifting because it’s thoughtful, but can also be paired with other gifts. If the home is particularly special, a larger piece might be a better option as it’s likely going to be a family heirloom or keepsake.

4) Consider the quality of your reference photo. I admit, I have worked from some pretty awful photos! It’s difficult, but possible. However, some photos do not show much detail at all. Your painting might be better as a smaller size if I’m not able to make out details from your reference photo.

5) What’s in your budget? The larger the painting, the pricier it will be. Consider what is within your budget. An 8x10 size is a great “middle” option as I can still get in a fair amount of details, but it can be displayed on a shelf or gallery wall or matted and framed to be displayed in a larger space.

I currently offer 4 different size options at different price points. Check my website for updated pricing.
